Celebrating the Entrepreneurial Spirit: Rochester’s R.A.V.E. Event

A Night to Remember at Two Discovery Square

Hey, Rochester! So, let’s talk about the happening that shook up the local business scene last week. The 12th Annual R.A.V.E. (Recognizing Awarding Valuing Entrepreneurs) Event went down, hosted by Rochester Area Economic Development Inc. (RAEDI). Picture this: a crowd of local bigwigs gathered at Two Discovery Square. It was an evening filled with applause, recognition, and a sprinkle of magic.

The Risky Business of Entrepreneurship

RAEDI President John Wade set the tone with some heartfelt words on the unique world of entrepreneurship. “The entrepreneurial ecosystem is kinda special. It’s all about risks and rewards,” he told the excited audience. Everyone in the room knew—they were in it together, pushing boundaries and making things happen right here in Rochester.

Lifetime Achievement – Progressive Tool & Manufacturing

One of the evening’s show-stoppers was the Lifetime Achievement award to Progressive Tool & Manufacturing. Founded by Wendell Zwart in a humble gas station about 55 years ago, this Pine Island staple grew into a powerhouse in the industry. From injection molding to tooling, they built a massive 50,000-square-foot complex with a little help from RAEDI, Pine Island, and the Small Business Administration. Wendell tipped his hat to his talented crew and community support.

Giving Back: Tawonda Burks and the Warrior Award

Enter Tawonda Burks, the dynamo behind countless Rochester startups. She snagged the Warrior Award for her relentless advocacy and support of minority-owned businesses. Two decades ago, she conquered the grind of launching her own venture. Now, she’s a beacon for emerging entrepreneurs, especially those who are often overlooked.

The Honored Trio of Entrepreneurs

Three standout businesses caught the spotlight. Each reflected Rochester’s entrepreneurial vigor, each with its own tale to tell.

  • Rochester Pallets: The Haeuszer family has been crafting pallets, meeting the ever-growing demands of Southeast Minnesota. Co-owner Joe Dal Santo emphasized how vital these little giants are to the global supply chain.

  • Canomiks: CEO Dr. Leena Pradhan-Nabzdyk is pioneering “food as medicine,” using genomics and AI to optimize health claims in consumables. Her advice for would-be entrepreneurs? Embrace the rollercoaster and never shy away from asking for help.

  • Limb Lab: Launched by Brandon Sampson and Marty Frana, they’re redefining prosthetics with a human touch. Brandon echoed his gratitude for a dedicated team that listens and delivers life-changing solutions.

Celebrating Community Success

As the evening wrapped up, Rochester’s thriving business pulse was on full display. RAEDI’s commitment to nurturing this ecosystem was more than evident. So, here’s to the risk-takers, the dreamers, and the doers who make Rochester the special place it is.
