Midtown Westport Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Injured on Saturday, Police Report

Another Day, Another Tragedy in Midtown KC

One man’s life was cut short after an overnight shooting in Kansas City’s Midtown Westport neighborhood, police said.

The Incident Unfolds

Just before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, officers rushed to the scene at West 39th and Central streets. They found a man with a gunshot wound and, unfortunately, paramedics declared him dead on the spot. While responding, officers discovered another man and a woman who also sustained gunshot wounds. They were whisked away to a hospital with injuries that, thankfully, weren’t life-threatening, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesperson with Kansas City police.

The Scene of the Crime

A group of people had gathered outside a business when the shots rang out, striking the three victims, DiMartino mentioned. The authorities are treating this incident as a homicide.

An Ongoing Investigation

Detectives are leaving no stone unturned, canvassing the area for witnesses and video surveillance. It’s all hands on deck as investigators aim to collect any physical evidence present at the crime scene. Meanwhile, they’ve not yet released the identity of the deceased victim.

Year after year, the numbers are grim. This killing marks Kansas City’s 98th homicide this year. Last year, around this time, the city had already witnessed 133 killings. This dip in numbers gives a bittersweet feeling; a lesser number doesn’t make things less tragic.

Lack of Immediate Information

As of Saturday, there wasn’t a whole lot of new information coming in. It’s like the city hit a wall. You’d think in a bustling city, someone must’ve seen something, right?
