A 50-year-old German gentleman has fallen prey to a rather elaborate scam, orchestrated by online fraudsters. The incident revolves around accommodation at Mumbai’s esteemed ‘Sahyadri’, the Maharashtra government’s distinguished guest house. According to the local police, the unfortunate event took place on a Tuesday.

Who is the Victim?

The gentleman in question is Tostan Bake. An international tourist guide by profession, Mr. Bake commenced his journey to India this past April. He spent the preceding two months residing in Goa, nurtured by a grand plan to establish a Yoga school.

Running Against Time

Mr. Bake, however, found himself in a bit of a pickle as his business visa was nearing its expiration on 20th September. With plans to travel to Thailand, he arrived in Mumbai on Monday. He urgently needed accommodation for a couple of days before his onward journey.

The Deceptive Offer

During his frantic search for lodging, Mr. Bake stumbled upon a website promising a room at the luxurious Sahyadri guest house located in the upscale Malabar Hill. The cost was quoted as Rs 9,270. Subsequently, he received a message on WhatsApp from a dubious character, requesting an advance payment.

Unwittingly, Mr. Bake made the payment. However, upon his arrival at Sahyadri, Mr. Bake was confronted with a harsh reality. Sahyadri is not a commercial hotel but a guest house reserved for government activities.

Authorities Take Action

Confronted with the disheartening realization that he had been swindled, Mr. Bake reported the incident to the local Malabar Hill police station. A case of cheating was promptly registered against unidentified individuals, initiating a thorough investigation into the matter.
