Sean Stein is president of the US-China Business Council (USCBC), a Washington-based non-profit organisation that promotes trade between the world’s two largest economies. The council represents more than 270 American companies doing business in China.

He most recently served as board chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and is chair emeritus of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Before that, he served for nearly three decades as a diplomat, including as US Consul General in Shenyang and Shanghai.

The Inevitable Extension of the Trade Pause

It’s almost a given, dear reader, that the 90-day pause on tariff increases shall be extended. Both sides have now announced a framework deal. Reverting to pre-Geneva, with those frightful triple-digit tariffs, is simply too ghastly a thought for either party.

Hopes for Future Trade Deals

By November, we might witness some crucial trade deals. With China adding two fentanyl precursors to its restricted list, there’s hope for a reduction in the 20 per cent tariff slapped by the US. Should this occur, it’s expected that China might lower its retaliatory tariffs. Alas, the US hasn’t yet taken any steps to match China’s endeavours.

Concerns of the Business Community

The business chaps are fretting incessantly; nearly all discussions seem tar-focused. Their voices, one hopes, will echo through the corridors of Washington soon enough.

A Diplomatic Journey

You see, Mr. Stein most recently held the esteemed position of board chair at the American Chamber of Commerce in China. Before that, he spent nearly three decades serving as a diplomat. His postings included the US Consulate in Shenyang and the renowned metropolis of Shanghai.

Prospects of Normalising Trade Relations

Returning to a more “normal” trade relationship remains a distant dream. However, the groundwork may just be in place. Lowering the tariffs on both sides might set us on the path. Only time and diplomatic channels will tell.

Viewing the Bigger Picture

Sean Stein’s role at the USCBC keeps him at the heart of these international dealings. And in truth, the broader picture involves much more than tariffs alone.
