Meta’s ‘Orion’ AR Glasses: The New Yorker Scoop

Zuckerberg Teases AR Glasses

Everyone’s talking about Meta’s latest gadget, the ‘Orion’ AR glasses. Yeah, the same company that’s been betting big on the metaverse is now diving headfirst into augmented reality.

Last February, Business Insider broke the news about Meta planning to demo its first bona fide AR glasses at the Connect conference. Internally, these glasses are known as "Orion."

The Tease On Threads

And if you’ve been paying attention this summer, Meta’s head honcho, Mark Zuckerberg, hasn’t been shy either. Did you catch that photo on Threads with a mysterious pair of glasses in the background? Yeah, Zuck said we’d hear more about them by the end of the year.

Not Your Average Shades

But here’s the kicker. The "Orion" glasses aren’t your standard shades. These aren’t those Meta Ray-Ban’s that don’t even have screens. And forget about comparing them to the bulky Quest headset, which is all about VR and AR passthrough cameras. No, these new AR glasses will incorporate visuals directly into the lenses.

Mark Zuckerberg previously predicted that smart glasses, enabled with AI technology, will become commonplace.

Could Connect Conference Be The Big Reveal?

The buzz is that the Connect keynote might be the grand stage where Meta gives us the first look at these glasses. Although we probably won’t be lining up to buy them anytime soon, seeing them in action would definitely give us a clue where Meta thinks AR is headed.

Zuck’s Vision

Zuckerberg’s bullish on the potential. He mentioned in an interview earlier this year that these won’t be as fashionable or slim as those Meta Ray-Bans. But style is apparently taking a backseat to functionality for now.

How They Stack Up

Feature Meta’s Ray-Bans Quest Headset ‘Orion’ AR Glasses’
Screen No Screen VR screens, AR cameras Visuals in lenses
Style Slim & Stylish Bulky Not as stylish
Release Date Available Available Not soon

The Future of AR Glasses

What’s clear is that AR glasses could become a bigger part of our daily lives soon. According to guys like Zuck, it’s just a matter of time before these things are everywhere. For now, let’s sit tight and see what unfolds at the Connect conference.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to see the world through Zuck’s eyes?
