It’s March: Let the Celebration Begin
Ah, Kansas City—home of jazz, barbecue, and now, our own glittery confetti moment because March is here, and it’s Women’s History Month. You see, this is the time when we tip our hats, raise our glasses, and sing the praises of those fierce femmes who’ve shaped our world for the better.
The Heart of the Celebration: Women-Owned Businesses
In case you didn’t know, every year a trio of dedicated businesses puts together an irresistible shindig right here in Columbus Park. We’re talking about Café Càphê, Lily Floral Collective, and Swoon Cookies—all powered by the passion and entrepreneurship of women. Together, they’ve coined the term “bad boss lady block”—and rightfully so.
Meet the Leading Ladies
Jackie Nguyen, the powerhouse behind Café Càphê—our local haven for Vietnamese coffee—pours not just coffee, but heart into making the event a success every year. "For women’s month and it so happens to be Women’s Day today," she notes, making it all the more special.
Meanwhile, Lily Floral is run by two talented women who’ve made a name for themselves in the wedding and events world with their magical flowers. Then there’s Swoon Cookies, which expertly tempts taste buds on the corner of 5th and Harrison streets, sweetening the deal with every bite.
A Community Affair
The block party is more than just a gathering. It’s a vibrant show of support from the community, featuring ten extraordinary women-owned businesses. Whether you’re stepping in for coffee, cookies, or a floral arrangement, every cent you spend fuels dreams, pays wages, and contributes to a more diverse and inclusive economy.
Why Support Women-Owned Local Businesses?
- Reduces inequality
- Strengthens the local economy
- Fosters community spirit
As Betsy Ford, co-owner of Lily Floral Collective, astutely observes, “Corporations are kind of taking over America. We really need to focus on our small, minority, and female-owned businesses.”
The Bigger Picture
And let’s not kid ourselves; this ain’t just about the dance and decor. Supporting local women-led enterprises has a larger agenda—arming these boss ladies with the fiscal fuel they need to thrive amidst corporate behemoths. In short, it’s about putting your money where your mouth is—right back into your community.

So, there you have it. If you’re around Kansas City this month, maybe shout it from the rooftop or better yet, head over to Columbus Park. Grab a cup of Jackie’s coffee, munch on a Swoon cookie, or savor a Lily floral arrangement—just make sure you’re part of it. Celebrate every woman-owned offering, one loving purchase at a time.
