Butler Store Gifts 100 Books to NES

A Delightful Donation to Northern Elementary

By Nila Harris

Northern Elementary School recently received a heartwarming gift. Tina Record, the school’s media specialist, couldn’t believe her luck when she discovered that 100 books were donated to the school library. Initially surprised, her reaction quickly turned to excitement upon seeing the quality of the books.

The Source of Generosity

The newly opened Dollar General in Butler was behind this generous gesture. They donated an impressive selection of high-quality, non-fiction books. For Record, this donation was significant. "That is nearly my entire yearly budget," she exclaimed. Typically, such books cost between £8 to £11 each.

Promoting Literacy Through Corporate Responsibility

Nicole Phillips, the general manager of Butler Dollar General, provided insight into this initiative. "Whenever we open a new store, we support the local community by donating books to a nearby school," she explained. It’s part of their efforts to boost literacy and keep children engaged in reading.

But their commitment goes beyond mere donations. Dollar General actively supports literacy through grants designed to assist initiatives for people of all ages. You can discover more about their initiatives on the Dollar General Literacy Foundation website.

A Legacy of Learning

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 by Cal Turner and Cal Turner Jr. It was created in honour of Dollar General’s co-founder, J.L. Turner, who had only a third-grade education. His legacy now lives on through a foundation committed to supporting students on their educational journeys.

Opportunities for All

Beyond book donations, Dollar General offers various grants to promote literacy nationwide. These include adult and youth literacy grants, family literacy schemes, and summer reading programs. For further details, consider exploring their literacy website.

This commendable initiative by Dollar General not only enriches Northern Elementary’s library but also serves as an encouraging example of corporate social responsibility. It exemplifies how businesses can significantly enhance educational opportunities within their communities.
