“I Was the Only Aussie in the Room”
Finding Myself Among Giants
So there I was, the lone Aussie among a sea of global professionals. As an insurance broker in these classes, I was swimming in diverse waters. I wasn’t the only one from the insurance world; a couple of C-suiters from big insurance firms joined me. But the crowd was vast and varied: mining execs, finance people, even the chief economist from Brazil’s largest bank. Oh, and let’s not forget the naval nuclear submarine captain who definitely stood out (see the photo below).
A Melting Pot of Talent
It was like the United Nations of business minds came together. All corners of the globe were represented. This mix made the experience richer, especially when you could sprinkle in a few good kangaroo jokes. That’s right, I was the token Aussie, which made for some hearty laughs. But hey, humor bridges cultures, doesn’t it?
Networking with the Best
What’s better than being surrounded by such a diverse group? You get perspectives you’d never have in your regular circles. It wasn’t just about insurance at this gig. We traded insights on everything—from navigating global markets to leading teams.
Learning from the Titans
For instance, chatting with the chief economist from Brazil’s largest bank was eye-opening. You’d be surprised at how much finance and insurance intertwine. Also, who knew there’d be a connection between maritime strategy and business insurance? The submarine captain brought some fascinating wisdom on leadership and strategy.
An Aussie’s Perspective
Being the solitary Australian among this group was something special. It wasn’t just about the novelty. It allowed me to represent and share a perspective others might not have considered. The camaraderie and humor made the experience unforgettable. Yes, kangaroo jokes are alive and well, and they’re a hit abroad!
Why It Matters
These experiences teach you more than textbooks ever could. Networking, learning, and laughing—it’s a package deal. Just another day in the world of a New Yorker—or, in this case, an Aussie in a New York-sized melting pot.
